Frequency Tables
A frequency table organises raw data by showing how often each value, or group of values, occurs.
Organising Raw Data
Example 1 — building a frequency table
people were asked their shoe size: , , , , , , , . Build a frequency table.
- Count how many times each value appears: appears times, appears times, appears once, appears once
- List each value with its count

Example 1 — cricket shots (categories)
A batter faces balls. The shot types are:
Drive, Cut, Drive, Pull, Cut, Sweep, Drive, Cut, Pull, Drive, Block, Cut, Drive, Sweep, Cut, Drive, Pull
Build a frequency table the same way — categories work exactly like numbers.
- List every shot type: Drive, Cut, Pull, Sweep, Block
- Tally how many times each appears
- Check the total is still

Answer: Cut , Drive , Pull , Sweep , Hook (total ). Mode = Cut.
For continuous or wide-ranging data, values are grouped into class intervals instead of listed one by one — for example, heights grouped into cm, cm, and so on.
