Cut, Crop and Replace
Crop to a better composition, copy or cut parts to new layers, and remove or replace unwanted areas.
Cropping
The Crop tool (C) trims an image to a better shape or composition.
- Choose the Crop tool. A box appears around the image.
- In the Options bar, choose a ratio (for example 4 : 5) or leave it free.
- Choose Rule of Thirds from the overlay menu to help position the subject.
- Drag the edges, or drag inside to move the picture. Turn off Delete Cropped Pixels if you might want to change the crop later.
- Press Enter.
Note: cropping the whole poster document would change its size. Usually you crop a photo in its own document first, or simply scale and mask the photo layer inside the poster.

Removing and Replacing
- Remove a small object (a sign, litter, a stray person): use the Spot Healing Brush (J) or the Remove tool, painting over it.
- Fill an area naturally: select it, then Edit → Content-Aware Fill. Photoshop fills it using surrounding pixels.
- Replace a background: select the subject (Select → Subject), add a layer mask so only the subject shows, then put a new background layer (a colour, a gradient or another photo) below it.
- Replace a sky: Edit → Sky Replacement swaps in a new sky and matches the lighting.
