Troubleshooting Word
Symptom → investigation → root cause → fix → prevention for real handbook failures.
The diagnostic loop
For every symptom:
- Show/Hide ¶ (Home → ¶)
- Identify layer: paragraph? section? field? anchor?
- Hypothesis: blank ¶ vs page break vs section break vs page break before style
- Fix smallest change
- F9 if numbers/TOC involved
- Prevention: style/section/template rule
Do not click random buttons until something changes.
Blank page
Symptom: Empty sheet between chapters.
Investigate: ¶ on → look for Page Break, Section Break, empty Heading paragraph with Page break before, or table row forcing break.
Fix: Delete stray break/empty ¶; or disable Page break before on style.
Prevention: Chapter breaks via Heading 1 style settings or one Next Page section — not Enter spam.
Wrong page numbering
Symptom: TOC page 9, footer page 11; or appendix continues cover Roman numerals.
Investigate: Which section is cursor in? Insert → Page Number → Format Page Numbers → Continue vs Start at. Section break boundaries with ¶.
Fix: Correct section break placement; unlink footer; restart numbering in new section.
Prevention: Draw section map on paper before numbering.
Broken TOC
Symptom: Missing chapter or wrong pages in TOC.
Investigate: Is chapter Heading 1? Navigation Pane lists it?
Fix: Apply heading style → click TOC → Update Table → Entire table or F9.
Prevention: Never TOC from manual bold headings.
Image moved unexpectedly
Symptom: Photo jumps when typing above it.
Investigate: Picture Format → Wrap Text — Inline vs Square/Tight. Anchor icon with ¶ on — image anchored to which paragraph?
Fix: In line with text for stable flow; or lock anchor to intended paragraph; avoid Fix position on page unless intentional.
Prevention: Insert images with deliberate wrap choice; not default from pasted HTML.
Table splits badly
Symptom: Row splits mid-text across pages unreadably.
Investigate: Table Properties → Row → Allow break across pages; repeat header row?
Fix: Uncheck Allow row to break across pages for that row; enable Repeat header rows; split table if needed.
Prevention: See Tables lesson — repeat header rows before print run.
Formatting inconsistency / style corruption
Symptom: One heading looks different though "same" style.
Investigate: Shift+F1 Reveal Formatting — direct formatting override?
Fix: Ctrl+Space, Ctrl+Q, reapply style.
Prevention: No manual overrides on headings.
Hands-on: diagnose the blank page
Goal
Find and remove the cause of a blank page before Open Day chapter.
James Okonkwo adds this to NorthgateHandbook.docx as part of one polished student handbook, policy pack, and open-day collateral before families arrive.
Show ¶
Where
Do this
You should see
- Break symbols visible.
Verification
Check your work
You are correct if all of these are true:
- Print Preview shows Open Day chapter immediately after previous content — no blank sheet.
- You can name the root cause (break type), not just 'deleted stuff until fixed'.
- TOC/footer page numbers match after F9 if you changed pagination.
