Visual hierarchy, white space, and redesign diagnosis — bad handbook vs professional layout.
Bad document → diagnosis → redesign
Before (bad): - 9 pt body everywhere "to fit" - Chapter titles only 1 pt larger than body - No space between sections - Tables full page width with no margins - Random blue sentences
Diagnosis: No hierarchy; reader cannot scan.
After (good): - Heading 1 18 pt with space before - Normal 11 pt, 1.15 spacing - Cover page with clear title and date - One pull quote for principal welcome - Tables sized to content with repeat header rows
Why better: Eye path — Title → welcome → chapter → detail. Parents find Open Day in seconds.
Word levers for design (not InDesign)
