Page Numbers
Insert, format, restart, and hide page numbers across sections.
Why page numbers differ by section
The handbook cover has no page number. The table of contents uses Roman numerals (i, ii, iii). Chapter 1 starts at 1 in Arabic numbers. James uses section breaks (previous lesson) so each part can have its own numbering format.
Insert page numbers from Insert → Page Number. Choose Bottom of Page or Top of Page — usually bottom centre in the footer. Different numbering formats include 1, 2, 3 and i, ii, iii.
Restart and continue numbering
Continue from previous section keeps counting across a section break. Restart numbering starts at a number you choose — often 1 at the first body chapter.
Hide number on first page (footer Different First Page) removes the number from the cover. Page X of Y uses fields: type Page and NumPages fields in the footer, or choose a built-in format from the gallery.
Hands-on steps
