Lists

PE kit rules have no fixed order — use bullets. Open-day steps must read 1, 2, 3 on Saturday 14 March 2026 — use numbering. Parents compare the numbered list in the body with the timetable table; both should list the same three steps in the same order.

Mixing manual numbers (typing 1. 2. 3.) with Word numbering breaks when you reorder lines. Word's list buttons keep numbers and bullets aligned when you add or remove items.

Under your Uniform heading, type three lines:

• Navy blazer
• School tie
• Black shoes

• 1Select all three lines.
• 2Home tab → Bullets (bullet icon).

Word adds bullets and keeps them aligned when you add or remove lines. Bullets suit unordered items like uniform kit — there is no "step one" for a tie.

Under Open Day, type:

• 1Select the three lines.
• 2Home tab → Numbering.

Word numbers them 1, 2, 3. Press Enter at the end of a line to add another numbered item. A timetable table might also show times — the numbered list gives the sequence; the table gives the clock times.

For a sub-point under item 2: place the cursor at the start of the sub-line, press Tab — or Home → Increase Indent. The sub-line nests under the parent item. Shift+Tab moves it back.

Multilevel lists help when uniform rules split into "summer" and "winter" kit under one bullet. Keep nesting shallow — parents scan quickly in the foyer.

Before print, read the Uniform bullets and Open Day numbers side by side with the schedule table. If the table says "Guided tour at 10:30" but the numbered list puts Q&A second, families get conflicting messages.

Home tab → Bullets and Numbering drop-down arrows offer different bullet shapes and number formats — pick one style per chapter and stay consistent.
