Bullets and Numbering
Home → Bullets and Numbering. When to use dots vs 1, 2, 3 on Open Day slides.
Bullets vs Numbers
Use bullets when order does not matter — department highlights, facilities, general tips.
Use numbers when steps must be followed in sequence — how to apply, how to book a tour.
Tour times (10:00 Hall, 10:30 Science, 11:00 Sports) must be read in time order. A numbered list or table shows sequence; bullets do not show that 10:30 comes after 10:00.
Add the Departments Slide
Parents scan five subjects quickly; order does not matter on the departments slide.
1. Click Home → New Slide → Title and Content. 2. Type Our departments in the title placeholder. 3. Click the large content placeholder. 4. Type each department on its own line: - English - Mathematics - Science - Humanities - Arts 5. If lines have no dots, click Home → Paragraph → Bullets. 6. Expected result: Five bullets list English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Arts.
Add a Numbered How-to-Apply List
Enrolment steps must happen in order on slide 6.
- Insert a slide titled How to apply with Title and Content layout.
- Click inside the body placeholder.
- Click Home → Paragraph → Numbering.
- Type these lines, pressing Enter after each:
- Collect a prospectus from Reception.
- Book a tour online or at the desk.
- Submit the application form by the following Friday.
- Expected result: Each line shows 1, 2, 3.
Lists in NorthgateOpenDay.pptx
Slide 4 (Our departments) uses bullets. Slide 6 (How to apply) uses numbers. Slide 3 (Tour schedule) may use a table instead of a list when times and locations need columns.
If selected lines lose their bullet dots, select the lines and click Home → Paragraph → Bullets. Home → Layout moves placeholders; it does not restore list markers.
Fix a List That Lost Its Markers
Copying text from Word sometimes strips bullets. Select the lines in the placeholder, then Home → Paragraph → Bullets or Numbering depending on what you need.
Transitions → Fade affects slide changes, not list formatting.
Example — Numbered tour times: Times in sequence fit a numbered list or a table. Bullets suggest items with no required order — fine for department names, wrong for a step-by-step enrolment path.
