Quadratic Equations
An equation with x squared can have two solutions. Factorising finds them directly.
What Is a Quadratic Equation?
A linear equation like has one solution. A quadratic equation usually has two solutions, because there are two different values of that make work out correctly.
One reliable way to solve a quadratic equation is to factorise it into two brackets.
Solving by Factorising
To factorise + bx + c, find two numbers that multiply to give c and add to give b. Then write the equation as two brackets.
If two things multiplied together equal zero, at least one of them must be zero. This is the key idea that lets us find both solutions.
Example 1 — easy numbers
