Laws of Indices
Rules for multiplying, dividing, and raising powers, plus what a zero or negative index means.
What Is an Index?
is read " to the power of ", or " cubed". is read " squared". The index tells you how many copies of are multiplied together.
Multiplying and Dividing Powers

Zero and Negative Indices
Two special cases follow directly from the division law:
- Any non-zero number to the power equals . For example, , and .
- A negative index means " over" the positive power. For example, means 1/.
