Introduction
What HTML is, the five-page tea room website you will build, and how the live editor works.
What Is HTML?
HTML is not a programming language — it does not make decisions or do calculations. It is a markup language: you mark up plain text with tags to say what each part is. The browser reads the tags and displays the page.
- HTML = the structure and content (this course).
- CSS = the look: colours, fonts and layout (the next course).
What You Will Build
You can look at the finished example site at any time: open the example site. It includes the CSS you will write in the next course, so it looks more polished than your pages will at first.
Try It: The Live Editor
Most lessons include a live editor. Change the code and the preview updates straight away. Try changing the heading text below.
index.html
What the browser shows
Try it: Change "Welcome" to your own greeting, or add another paragraph between <p> and </p>.
