Frequency Tables

A frequency table organises raw data by showing how often each value, or group of values, occurs.

Example 1 — building a frequency table

8 people were asked their shoe size: 6, 7, 6, 8, 7, 7, 9, 6 . Build a frequency table. 1 Count how many times each value appears: 6 appears 3 times, 7 appears 3 times, 8 appears once, 9 appears once 2 List each value with its count

The frequencies add up to 8 — matching the original 8 people surveyed.

For continuous or wide-ranging data, values are grouped into class intervals instead of listed one by one — for example, heights grouped into 150 - 159 cm, 160 - 169 cm, and so on.

Practice

A frequency table has frequencies 4, 7, 5, and 2 . Find the total number of data values.
